Organic Pain Relief

I have been using this for a couple of weeks nearly now and it has helped me so much with my knee pain. I’ve had reports from a couple of others that I’ve passed it on to also and promised to post this up as I had someone else asking for it. So here is my pain relief potion.  Please note, I use all organic ingredients in my things and I recommend you do the same but it’s entirely up to you with this one.

The cayenne pepper is from the same family as bell peppers, chilies,  paprika and habaneros. Cayenne has been used for centuries for pain relief, it is one of the greatest spices on earth! Cayenne is one of the hot peppers, the heat in peppers comes from something called something called capsaicin, the more capsaicin in a pepper, the hotter it is.  To give you an idea of the different heats, they are measured in Scoville heat units (SHU), bell peppers have 0 SHU and cayenne has 30,000 SHU, to give you the scale, the really hot habanero has over 100,000 SHU!

Why does this help with pain?

We have something in our bodies called substance P, Substance P is a neurotransmitter cayennethat relays information and results in what we call pain.  Capsaicin is known to block substance P and is a constituent of cayenne.  Below I’m giving you a really simple recipe that you can mix up in around 10 minutes and will be ready to use in about an hour, once you’ve tried it, you can then see how well it works for you and if you need something stronger, you can substitute the cayenne for something with more capsaicin in.  If you want more of a salve (imagine the texture of lip salve), then leave a comment and I will post it up, it’s more complicated to make but easier to apply.

It may take one to two weeks to really notice the difference, depending on the type of pain you are experiencing, arthritic pain often takes at least a week.  You will feel a warm sensation once applied, this is the heat of the cayenne and it is what helps with the pain.

WARNING: Please wash your hands immediately after handling, you really don’t want this in contact with your eyes – it will really sting. If the pain is in your hands, it would be worth applying it at night and sleeping with gloves on.

Simple recipe

  • I use organic virgin coconut oil for this one – you can use your favourite, even olive oil if you like.
  • Take about 6 to 7 table spoons of your preferred oil
  • Put the oil in a pan on a low heat, if using a solid oil like coconut oil, heat until melted, others, just until warm.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of organic cayenne pepper
  • Keep on a low heat for around 10 minutes, stirring regularly.
  • Remove from heat and put into your container.

If you want to use it fairly quickly, pop in the fridge, taking out every 10 minutes or so to give it a good stir.  Otherwise, leave to cool at room temperature and give it a good mix every hour or so.

It’s now ready to use – again, don’t forget to wash your hands.  If you are using coconut oil, this recipe smells delicious! – I would recommend labelling it.
