Better than sleeping pills! Banana Tea with Cinnamon.

As with many of the remedies you’ll see me write, I found this out of desperation to have a half decent sleep. This recipe came up many, many times as the best thing for helping to get a good, deep sleep. I’ll give you the recipe and method, then I’ll tell you why it works.

You’ll need the following:

A pan, water, one organic banana, organic cinnamon and a mug! That’s it. Chop the ends off an organic banana and cut into quarters (or leave whole), put in a pan and cover with water, add a pinch of cinnamon to the water (add depending on how much you like cinnamon and if you don’t like it at all, leave it out), boil the banana in the water for 10 minutes, then pour into a mug and drink.  I’d recommend having this about an hour before you plan to sleep to give it time to work. Organic is important too, the last thing you want is to introduce all kinds of nasty chemicals into the mix.


The science behind the tea:  Bananas are full of so many things, potassium, magnesium, tryptophan, plus much more, the skin is even richer in these things. Why is this good for sleep? With this simple recipe, you can get the benefits of the potassium and magnesium in the banana peel. Potassium and magnesium are beneficial for the nervous system and are great for relaxing the muscles. Magnesium is in fact, the most important mineral for muscle relaxation and can reduce muscle cramps along with other aches and pains. Stress lowers the magnesium levels in your body and yet you need it to deal with stress and to allow you to relax and sleep. The skin is also packed full of tryptophan, this is key in the creation of serotonin,  the bodies own anti-depressant and sleep inducer. Then, if you add cinnamon, this is great for balancing blood sugar levels, when sugar levels are balanced the body will function in a way that allows for a better sleep.

On top of that, there are also other benefits to the tea, these include a cholesterol lowering dietary fibre and a carotenoid called xanthophyll lutein wihich is an anti oxidant and is known to protect against eye stress.

Do seek your doctor’s advice if you are on medications for depression and the like. Just a quick call to confirm you’re okay to try this.

Oh and one last thing, if you are worried about wasting a banana, firstly a good sleep is well worth a banana and secondly, I like to save mine and eat it on porridge the next morning with a small dash of maple syrup 😉
